Building a Flame Maple Head and Cab for a Fender Twin Reverb with Dovetails
Had an opportunity to tackle a REALLY cool customer project. He wanted a head an cabinet built for a silverface twin reverb, but he wanted it built from solid flamed maple. Typically these are built to reduce the weight of the combo, but this one is HEAVY! Constructed from 3/4 maple and dovetail joints - this thing is solid as a rock!

How to Refinish a guitar with rattle can spray paint [re-upload]

The original video had a copyright claim against the background music. This is a re-upload with no music. You don't need expensive equipment to get a high quality paint job (on anything). I walk through all of the steps to refinish a guitar with nitrocellulose lacquer from stewmac.com . It takes some elbow grease, but the results are pretty good. (Paint results are better than my guitar playing!)

Nice. Is there any method of taking a 2D drawing say a cartoon and make it into a 3D object
What if you don’t want the angle so extreme? Would you make the inner circle larger?
I’m not sure what you mean by extreme, but yes changing the size of either the inner or outer circle changes the angle of the cone. Looking at my cross section if I want the cone flatter, I’d make the inner circle smaller, or the other one larger.
The screening does absolutely nothing. Pickups (especially singles) receive noise/hum thousands times more than all guitar wiring…even not screened wires.
You have saved me I cannot math for anything
130mm X 3.1416 = 408.4mm circumstance. You may need to add run-in and run-out for slip rollers.
How do you make DIY WOOD primer ? ingredient ?
You should have stripped off that nasty poly finish if you're gonna use nitrocellulose paint. Nice job all the same though.
I bet you spent the next week cleaning all the overspray off your area and tools....
How did you get the front top edge of the cabinet rounded? Is that a different router bit? Thanks, great video
Yes I used a round over bit on all of the corners, I think it was a 1/4” radius. For the front edge where it’s beveled I did it by sanding it by hand.
@@AdamBeckSpeed thanks
Absolutely fantastic! For most everything I will ever do, this is sooooo simple it’s pure genius. The other explanations took me back to my Trig classes in 1958, where I really did not want to go. Seems the only calculation needed beyond this is to calculate the circumference for the large end, and add your choice of overlap. For example, if the large diameter was 4 inches, then 4 x pi gives the circumference, and if an overlap of 1/4” is needed for solder, glue, add that to the end of the pattern and draw a line parallel to the cone end.
Material thickness is always my issue with this calculation. If I'm making it out of .063" aluminum that throws the calculation way off, especially considering the material is at an angle. This is why I like to cut it long and trim to fit. Thanks!
Excellent work, I would like to do it too, could you help me by sharing the plans? I live in Venezuela and around here it is difficult to get a model like that
Sorry no plans I built to the dimensions of the fender chassis. I’m sure there are some online
👍
Hi. What was the foil that you placed in the body voids?
Copper shielding tape from Stewmac
Much appreciated! 😅
Superb craftsmanship, beautiful result. Can you post a video of how you made the jig for the dovetail joints? I am very interested because I just bought a Quilter amp but decided to make a speaker cabinet for a 15" and 12" speaker, to make it sound like a Solid state Fender Bassman which I returned, not because it didn't sound great, but because it is too heavy to carry up and down 3 flights of stairs.
The dovetail jig is form Peachtree woodworking, it works great.
How’d you get the string through rings off?
They just pull out. They are a press fit. There is nothing holding them in. They may be stuck in the paint though. Scoring around them with a razor will prevent them from taking a big paint chip.
Very cool.
great instructions. How would you go about doing a satin finish?
same way. Just use a satin clearcoat and stop there. Dont wet sand or buff.
@@AdamBeckSpeed cool! Able to achieve I totally smooth satin finish using a spray can, if there's no sanding or buffing involved?
Damn what if you already sanded and buffed it lol
you did a great job- damn though- enough with the black...blacked out guitar through a blacked out super over a blacked out cab-lol
hey if it's all black it all matches!
I thought it wasn't a good idea to spray nitro over poly coat? How did the paint job hold up over the next couple of years??
Poly makes a pretty good primer for a lot of top coats. It’s held up well, it was super thin so it got some cool wear where your arm rests.
Thanks for the tips, I'm about to refinish my P bass so I might end up using the stew mac rattle can nitro's then!@@AdamBeckSpeed
Can’t believe I stumbled across this video. My dad wired a Blackface Twin kit and built a head and extension cab. Was one of the last things he did before unexpectedly passing. It looks eerily identical to this.
millimeter is in lowercase letters. where did you learn English? in Ohio? oy vey.
Nice job!!! I use the same jig to cut my dovetails, but I get chipping on the exit side. Now I try to rout from the “far side” inward towards me first, then finish going “away from me. But you don’t get chipping at all! Impressive.
That is jam up and jelly tight ! It may be more practical to wrap it,..But I think it would almost be a friggin crime to cover up that beautiful wood. Use a sanding sealer and then go with a satin clear finish.. The cab and the head are absolutely BEAUTIFUL !!
one questio i got the randall rh100 1g but without the case is there any page how to attached in the new wood case that i got D:?
I’m not familiar with that head but I’m sure it’s possible. You just need to get creative
Ok i solved the enclosure wood piece just one las part which I’m kind lost got any idea tip trick on how to make the holes true the wood so they match the metal enclosure because once I slide the head there’s no way to see the holes
Sir Please let me know how to contact you
Lovely work. Looks great.
CONGRATULATIONS. A true masterpiece.👍👍👍
I think they discontinued them. I’m trying to buy a bunch more but can’t find them anywhere.
Well that stinks. I think I bought 49 in total. Was planning on getting more though.
me wanting to repaint my electric guitar, watching closely because it will gonna be my first time
Is your fan closed off here to get the actual burst the right size?
Yeah I was trying to make it spray round but the gun was not cooperating so I just made the fan as small as possible so I had the most control. Thats why you can see me doing so many test sprays on the paper.
@@AdamBeckSpeed brilliant thank you for that. I'm about to attempt my first burst and I need all the help I can get 😂
Yo gotta be a body man huh? I grew up in a body shop. And your vernacular is just like the guys i knew
Well done. That awfull candy apple finish needed to go.
Finally! Some one who agrees the red is lame. Thanks!
But it ain't got no holes!
Nice job!!
The best fastest and simplest way of all the 10,000 vids I been wasting my time on. Thank u brutha
Glad it worked for you!
Ditto !!!
i SEEN ALOT OF DIFFERENT CONE LAYOUTS YOURS EXPLAINS IT THE BEST
Great job cowboy!! there is pawn shop Near the strip club where I work (dance), they're selling a fender mim "squier series" (I guess from the 90s) if i can get a good deal for it... I'm going to refinish it following your steps.
Thank you! This method is great for sewing, no need to factor in seam allowance.
The walnut looks much better than that frankentop
Bummed that you skipped over the hard part. How do you figure out the final cut?
Awesome build... i would not use warped wood though..
Great video Adam! I have a bit more complex shape: I need to make a cone shaped like a Volcano: wide bottom, tapers inward to narrow top. Think of the police megaphone but standing upward. Taper has me. Stumped Could you help me solve this?
Are the sides straight or are they concave? Thats the profile from top to bottom. If they’re straight, you would do just like I showed. If concave it becomes a compound curve and you can’t really use this method. How big would it need to be?
@@AdamBeckSpeed thank you for replying and great questions. I look at it as a closed cylinder type shape. Dimms: 10”ht 6”dia at bottom 3”dia at the top - The concave curve starts immediately from the bott then curves slightly in & up for a climb of 3”+- - At that transition point the dia is ~3-3.25” as it smooths out. -Then the remaining 7” is just a 3”dia cylinder to the top. - Goal is to have a nice, concave curve with smooth transitioning from that 1st 3” into that 7” of straight line upward.. - I am making a pottery vase out clay. - Initially I throw this shaped pot on the wheel. This shape is perfect for this hand technique. But too much for production run of 50 An easier way is to make a template from a pressed slab of clay & trace it,cut it out, fold over to get shape needed. But since this shape is not as simple as a cone I have a puzzle. So I cut open the thrown one, unfolded it flat then traced it onto the slab. - But it doesn’t translate well when folding it over to begin shaping. Hard to explain, . I don’t know how to represent that junction point from curve to linear onto paper. I know I can borrow some of the steps in you’re vid but stumble on this shape. Thinking as I write: should I break this into 2 separate shapes? - A 7”l x 3”dia cylinder - A cone’ish shape at” 6”dia to 3”dia cone then attaché the two? - This is doable even with high qty but Still requires a lot of ‘blending to make that curve which costs me time. 0pay now/pay later 😀 Well any insight is appreciated Adam Sorry for long txt here
Apologies Aamber I know almost nothing about clay pottery. It. Seems like you could use this pattern as part of the process. The tough part is gonna be the curve. Could you make a straight buck to shape the clay over and then add the curved part on the wheel?
@@AdamBeckSpeed No worries and I agree with you. I think I will break down the shape into 3 smaller, manageable parts, then attach together. Thanks again
Perfect, and about the sound? Improved?
Sounds great! There were. Lot of things changed, (speaker, materials and dimensions) hard to say what had the most affect.
@@AdamBeckSpeed nice :)
What a great deal for a beautiful vintage head and cab. New ones go for that without the beautiful wood work.
i make yard birds from shovels. started a Santa bird and needed a patern like this for the hat. i don't have a slip roller but im good w forming metal. thanks
Dude, I wish I’d thought of that way of storing screws!
Yeah it’s a great trick, especially for projects with a bunch of different screws.
@@AdamBeckSpeedmechanic trick 😉
Hi, I've just re watched your video on refinishing the guitar body,I don't have 4000 grit paper to sand, can I use 5000 grit?
Yes. You’re talking after paint and clear you can go as fine as you like. It may just take a little more elbow grease. BEFORE paint though, don’t go finer than 400.
What is the measurement for the cut line?
I dont remember that one. Honestly, I never use it because things like material thickness and the width of the pen / marker you use can throw it off. I like to cut it long and trim to fit.
@@AdamBeckSpeed thanks for answering! This video was super helpful for what I was trying to do!
Pretty stupid finishing a guitar body before routing the pickup cavities!
It was an experiment, and it made wet sanding much easier and more consistent. I wouldn't do it this way again, but caused no issues.
This is one of the most coolest and bad ass things I’ve seen
wish it was in inches
It works exactly the same, it's just easier to do quick math with metric. dimensions would be like: 1 3/16" at the top, 5 1/8" at the bottom and 3.5" tall.
